In Service

1. Food Outreach Program.

foodbagThe island of Kaua’i is regarded by many as “paradise.” Indeed, those of us who live here treasure our Garden Island as one of the most naturally beautiful places in the world. It is sometimes difficult to consider an unpleasant, yet very real existing condition:

Many people here are living in poverty.

  • Upwards of 6,000 Kauaians receive food assistance each month.
  • Approximately 1500 are seniors and 3000 are children.

It is not uncommon for these residents to be faced with a choice between buying food and paying for housing.

We Make it Easy for You to Help.

Members of The Jewish Community of Kaua’i, in keeping with the Jewish tradition of tzedakah or charity, and the Hawaiian spirit of aloha, donate food and money to the Loaves and Fishes Food Pantry, which operates out of St. Michael’s Church.

As St. Michael’s is our “home” for religious services and social events, there is a connection between our congregation and the food pantry. Although Loaves and Fishes finds it necessary to spend money for much of their food, they give that food, at no cost, to people in need.

Please bring non-perishable foods when you attend any JCK function.

This includes canned goods and boxed foods.  The Pantry is always in need of canned meats and main dishes such as canned ravioli, and boxes of macaroni and cheese. Canned vegetables are also in demand and cereal is appreciated. Please bring in addition to food, empty plastic grocery bags and egg cartons.

Empty plastic grocery bags and egg cartons are needed too.

Please add this to any food gift you make.

Financial donations are appreciated.

Checks should be made payable to St. Michael’s Episcopal Church with a note on the memo: “Loaves And Fishes.”

Donations are collected, tallied and recorded as having been received from the Jewish Community of Kaua’i and are tax-deductible.

JCK members are most welcome to contribute to The Kaua’i Food Bank.

This can be in addition to, or instead of, Loaves and Fishes.

Thank you for your generosity and support.  For questions or comments please contact Judy Rachap at jgrachap@hawaii.rr.com.
