Paradise Bike Ride Volunteers Needed

The Jewish Community of Kauai  is dedicated, in part, to be active participants in the social web of our island home.  We have been asked if any of our members would be willing to volunteer to help with the Malama Pono Paradise Bike Ride.    Malama Pono Health Services began as a grass-roots response to HIV on the 'Garden Isle'. Today, the mission of M?lama Pono is to educate and support those dealing with HIV/AIDS, STDs, and infectious Hepatitis. Paradise Ride Kauai is an important source of funding and helps provide services and programs not otherwise supported by Kauai United Way and State or Federal programs. Volunteers, including kids with their parents, are needed on August 6 and 7, 2011.If you can help, please contact Elyse Litvackejlitvak212@gmail.com808-632-0034

Passover 2011 Thank you

Mahalo to all who helped create a warm and welcoming Seder on Kauai.
A letter from a grateful attendee:
Time has passed and we have returned to New York from a wonderful- but far too short- stay on the Garden Island. I have to say that our Passover evening with your congregation was the highlight of our trip. We felt so welcomed and never experienced a seder quite like that before. As my daughter continues her preparation for her Bat Mitzvah    I know she will be reflecting on the sense of community and the caring that was so evident in every aspect of your celebration in Kauai. Your generous invitation to let us join in your Passover meal was the embodiment of a spirit of Jewish outreach and strong ties wherever Jews might gather.
Thank you ever so much for sharing your seder with visitors from "the Mainland." Please extend our gratitude to everyone who made it such a special and memorable evening.
Best Regards,
Gail, Steve and Allie Rosselot Herskovitz

Hazak U'Baruch -- Strength and Blessing

In Sephardic synagogues a custom is for the leader of the service to say to the congregants "hazak u'baruch", strength and blessing, while the congregants reply "hazak v'ematz", be strong and courageous.  In both cases the strength comes from the Torah.  We wish Michael Raithaus and Eli Matola strength, blessing, and courage as they lead this Saturday's service as well as in their lives after high school.  Please join us May 28, 2011 at 10am in Lihue for Shabbat prayer followed by refreshments sponsored by Vicki Ellacott.  Please call Dale 808-639-0283 with any questions.

Shabbat Mazel Tov

On May 28, 2011 we are happy to have Eli Mattola and Michael Raithaus leading our Shabbat service.  Both of these young men have grown up in our community, had their Bar Mitzvahs here, and are now going off to college.  Please join us as they lead us in prayer and share our nachas.  There will be a Oneg Shabbat after the service graciously provided by Vicki Ellacott.

Purim 2011

httpv://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G9RKnoVETu8FLASH!- the evil Haman (boooo) is defeated and the Jews are saved by Queen Esther. The story has been retold for millennia and the tradition continues at the JCK’s annual Purim party.  The Sunday school kids, regaled in costume, put on a wonderful play with acting and singing. The event was followed by a sumptuous pot luck feast. All who attended had a grand time.
