National Day of Prayer: Response to Garden Island

The letter below was written by Jewish Community member Monroe Richman in response to the letter in Friday's Garden Island on the Religion page. Friday's paper states Reverend Franklin Graham, who was dis-invited to pray with the armed forces on National Prayer Day, will be on Kauai calling for the Christian community to join him in praying for our country this coming Thursday. It would be appropriate for any of our members to show up at Monroe's house and even offer assistance if he should get a significant response.

I am looking forward to the 59th Annual National Day of Prayer to be held next Thursday at the Civic Center Rotunda. The only problem is that only Christians were invited. What do I do with all my other friends on the island? Aren't they invited as well? I'm talking about people living here who are Buddhists, Hindus, Baha'i, Jews, Muslims and others as well. Are they to be excluded? If so, I have a solution. National Prayer Day will be celebrated at my home. All faiths are invited. After all they comprise my friends.

I live at 1728 Keoniloa Place, Koloa, and tea and cookies will be served. Please RSVP so that we have enough provisions or bring your own pot luck. My phone number is 742-9204. Let's make this truly a National Prayer Day and include anyone who prays to come. We will even invite atheists if they have a reason to give thanks. See you at my home 11:30 to 12:30 next Thursday, May 6, 2010 and please bring a prayer that we can all share.

Passover Update and Matzah Found

First, a reminder that we need your seder registration as soon as possible.  We're looking forward to seeing everyone on March 29.Kauai Matzah HuntFinding matzah on Kauai, and in all of Hawaii, can be a challenge. This year however, we have some good news.1.  In Kapaa, Safeway has many cases found in the store room by the vendor and it is dated for this year. They have plenty of macaroons and juice too. Foodland will be getting Passover products but not plain matzah (they are trying to get some for next year). In Lihue, Times market is already sold out of plain matzah but does have other Passover items.2.  We hope to have matzah for sale at our community Seder.Homemade MatzahIf you'd rather make your own maztos than rely on the difficult to find and less tasty commercial variety, here's Jeff Tucker's recipe. It will later be found in our Kitchen Corner.Makes 8-12, depending on preferred size

  • 2 1/2 cups flour (white and/or wheat)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon salt

Pre-heat the oven to 475°. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper.

  • Mix together flour and water. Knead briefly into a smooth ball (several minutes). Add small amount of flour if dough is sticky.
  • Cut the dough into equal pieces. Roll out the dough as thin as possible, then move to cookie sheet and poke all over with fork to prevent air pockets. The thiner you roll it, the crisper it will be.
  • Bake until golden and crisp, about 3-5 minutes.

Kashrut: If you don't keep kosher, this is a lot easier.  Kosher law requires that the matzohs be done baking with 18 minutes of mixing the flour and water. Finding Passover flour (kemach shel matzah shamura) is another trick. Standard flour isn't acceptable for Passover because the wheat berries have been in contact with water.Comments.Subscribe to our email updates.Photo credit: Wikipedia Commons.

We Need Your Website Comments

The goal of our new website is to bring the Jewish Community of Kauai together electronically, in ways that replicate communities that meet in person more frequently than we are able to. Our more frequent communication now includes visual and audio content and connects us wherever we receive email, even with those who we rarely see in person. You can help make our discussions more meaningful. When you post a comment on the website, it transforms the communication from a one-way monologue from those on your Board of Directors who author the website, to a group discussion within the community at large. It becomes as though we are in a room together talking. Here's how to read or write a comment:

  • If you're reading one of our emails, , click on the comment link that is located at the bottom of each post.  It looks something like the image above.
  • On the website itself, there is a comment button (that works the same way), located directly under each post title.

Thanks to those who've already contributed to our online discussions including Inette I., Marty and Carol K., Vicki E., Monroe R., Lucy M., Carol P., Richard T., and others.Comments.Subscribe to our email updates.
