When Is the Best Time To Plant a Tree?
This month we are celebrating Tu Bi’Shvat (Jewish Arbor Day). I remember as a child, collecting dimes which we proudly placed in the slots on the card. When we had collected 25 dimes, we handed it in to our HebrewSchool teacher. It was enough to plant one tree in Israel. What difference did one tree make? Not much. But across the US all the kids were collecting dimes. Collectively our little cards filled with dimes have planted tens of millions of tress in Eretz Yisrael (the land of Israel). Our little cards turned a desert land into a virtual oasis and has contributed in some small part to Israel’s survival . Where am I going with this? Many of us golden seniors have been blessed with a good life. We have the ability to make a difference in the lives of the next generation and future generations of Jews on Kauai. At some point in the not too distant future, we will be able to have our own building. Perhaps not a grand edifice, but a place of our own. A place to house our sacred Torah. A place where someday our Kauai Rabbi will have a bima to speak from and chant “Sh’ma Yisrael Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad.”Through the generosity of some individuals, we have a corpus started. This is my appeal to have you bequeath a portion of your estate to the Jewish Community of Kauai so that this dream can become a reality. You may choose a dollar amount or simply a percent of what you will be passing on. May I suggest 10% or 5% or 1%? May I suggest $100,000 or $50,000 or $25,000 or whatever you are able?Carole & I have done this. We alone will not create the Synagogue. But your contributions along side ours, will. Will you stand with us to help create a sanctuary you and I may never see, a place where the sweet chanting of the Sh’ma will never be heard by our ears and hearts?A simple one page addendum to your will is all that is necessary. Please contact me if you would like this form(kahn.marty@gmail.com), or if you would like to talk 808-652-7297.
