Chanukah is the Jewish festival commemorating the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem when the greatly outnumbered Maccabees were victorious in defeating their oppressors. It is also referred to as the Festival of Lights. In the rededication ceremony, there was only enough holy oil to burn for one night. The miracle was that it burned for eight nights, which was enough time to get more oil for the temple.

Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting this year on Thursday, December 10 at sundown, which is the 25th day of Kislev on the Hebrew calendar.

Candles are lit nightly using the shamash (an extra helper candle), with one additional candle lit with the shamash until all eight candles are burning together on the last festival night. Candles are lit from right to left. Other ways to traditionally celebrate include playing the game of dreidel as well as eating oil-prepared foods, including latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (doughnuts).
